If you were leading a department of 100 people, the research shows that in most cases only 21 people will be running along with you, 42 will be moving at a more sedate pace, and 38 will only get off their butts when they have to. Those are sad statistics.
You can do better than that. Let’s say you decide to double the number of people running with you or ahead of you at times. How do you accomplish that? It begins with a deep understanding that leadership is not about you—it’s about them. It’s about getting the job done by tapping into their energy, their talent, their creativity, and their desire to contribute.
You want to think less in terms of executing the strategy (sounds like you want to kill it), and more about bringing it to life. So stop pulling the well-worn levers of targets and rewards, and begin to use even the smallest of moments to bring your strategic priorities to life. Use each meeting, each email, and each message as a moment where you can create a little more clarity or a little more commitment. Then, the people can act with a little more confidence and move forward faster.
